I recently started a delicious pot of honey a student kindly gave me for Christmas, and it got me thinking about the word honey in English, French and German, and how it can be used, specifically the stuff bees manufacture.
French speakers call it le miel, which is derived from the Latin mel, and German speakers use der Honig, which stems from Old High German honag. The English word honey was hunig in Old English, a relative of honag, with German and English once starting out as the same Germanic language.
